1. Plan your video
Before you get started think about the aim of the video – what are you trying to say? Creating a script and storyboard can be really helpful to ensure you capture exactly what you want and need.
2. Be prepared
Being prepared is one of the most important things when filming. This needs to be your first thought before you start.
- Keep plenty of memory cards, tapes, or discs on hand. It’s very frustrating to run out of space or battery when filming
- Think about where you are filming. Will you need a tripod, extra lighting or a microphone?
- How will you be formatting your video? Cameras have different settings, if its the wrong setting you may have to start again or get the video formatted before you can start editing.
3. Use a Tripod
The last thing you want after spending time filming is shaky shots. A tripod is a great way to solve this problem.
4. Audio
Sound is very important when filming. A camera will pick up everything and enhance it. What you might think is a quiet noise will be a lot louder on the film. Try to find somewhere quiet.
Wind noise is a real problem. Ensure you are filming in a sheltered place or on a still day. Use an external microphone with wind protector to help reduce any sound distortion.
5. Zoom and Pan
Try to minimize these where possible. If necessary take it very slowly or you’ll leave the viewer feeling sick.
6. Frame your shots
Framing your shot well is very important. Try not to crop in too close to your subject to prevent headless bodies or limbs missing in the final edit.
Using different angles to film will improve the look and interest of your final video. If you have the advantage of more than one camera use it.
7. Editing
When it comes to editing your video there are things to consider whilst filming that will help when putting your final video together. For example:
- If you are conducting an interview try not to talk over each other, always leave space between one person speaking and another starting.
- If you mess up don’t worry start again its better to get it right.
- Try not to move around if you are filming, the camera will pick up everything. Shuffling that script whilst you wait will be picked up.
- Play back the film while on location to ensure you have everything you need for your storyboard.
